I am Scottish visual artist and writer currently based in Glasgow. Through the worlds I create, I explore the complex emotional landscapes of the human experience and the malleable, murky, subconscious and often partly fictional nature of human perception. However I also like to create a sense of unreality, untethered-ness, or the suggestion of vaguely sketched omnipotence in my work. I am interested in continuing our age-old penchant for utilising fantasy, spirituality, myth-making and world-building in order to process the contradictions, mysteries, beauties, tragedies and surrealities of our everyday experiences, as well as feeble instruments with which to guess at what realities may lie beyond our comprehension. My work likes to play with and poke fun at how these tools are used in the context of late capitalism; often in a much more strained, confused and disorted way than that of our ancestors. By satirising this, my work also shows the beauty in humanities continuance of such whimsical traditions within such a strange peroid of human history. At once tongue-in-cheek and deadly serious, my work asks absurd questions such as "Is an elf bar buried under a frozen pond a metaphor for our collective spiritual bankrupty, or is it just an elf bar? 🤔"
My work often contains inside jokes which only I understand, references to the city of Glasgow, and oblique, conceptually vague motifs such as an image of a naked woman holding a fish. Rather than alienate the viewer, this specificity operates within James Joyce's idea that “in the particular is contained the universal". I hope that the idiosyncratic, bordering on autio-biographical nature of my work manages to tap into the collective unconscious, eliciting a sensation which is at once familiar and foreign, unlikely yet instantly recognisable. Dejavu for an experience which you are certain you have never had.
My work is for sale on a sliding scale. Please email to enquire about prices. I am always open to commissions and I'm particularly happy to make gig backdrops/album covers/etc for local bands.
I'm interested in art projects which operate outside of the constructions of public/private land, ownership, legibility and economics, which I have began to explore through organising free flat gigs/art shows. I am always up for being contacted about being involved in group projects that share a similar DIY ethos.
